Cold Weather Cat Care

Winter isn’t far off now. While our feline friends do have fur coats, they are still vulnerable to the danger and discomfort cold weather presents. Read on as a Bolingbrook, IL vet offers some tips on caring for Fluffy in winter.

Although cats are very clean, Fluffy can still use a helping hand with grooming. Dead fur and dander are not only itchy, they also detract from the insulating qualities of your pet’s coat. Brushing your cat regularly will help keep her warm and comfortable. It’s also a good way to spend time with her!

Napping Spots

Did you know that cats sleep even more than usual when it’s cold and dreary out? Offer Fluffy lots of warm, comfy spots to snuggle up in. If your pet is a senior and/or is always burrowing in under blankets, offer her a thermal pet bed.

Exercise is just as important and beneficial for pets as it is for people. Fluffy probably isn’t very interested in doing stair runs, so you may need to trick her into moving. How do you do that? Play with her! Pouncing and jumping are great kitty cardio options.

Keep Kitty In

We always recommend keeping cats indoors: they’re both safer and healthier staying in. This is especially true in winter. Winter weather can be very dangerous for pets! Cats often get frostbite on the tips of their ears and tails. Fluffy could also get trapped somewhere in a storm. Antifreeze spills are another concern. It’s extremely toxic to pets, but unfortunately many brands have a taste that cats love. If you do let your pet go out, make sure she has an emergency shelter. This can be a tote with some newspapers inside it and a small hole cut into it to make a door.

Kitty Comforts

Senior cats often get very stiff and sore in cold weather. This can be a sign of arthritis. If you know or suspect that your pet has arthritis, bring her to the vet for an examination. Although arthritis can’t be cured, there are ways to manage it, including medication, massage, and even supplements. Ask your vet for more information.

Cold days are perfect for snuggling up with cats. Spend some quality down time with Fluffy this winter!
