Dog Bathing Mistakes

Dogs are known for being rather less than enthusiastic about baths. In fact, it’s probably safe for us to say that many of our canine patients bolt for their favorite hiding spots at the mention of the dreaded B-word. However, keeping your pet clean is crucial to his health and well-being, not to mention for preventing bad doggy odor. However, there are some things to keep in mind when bathing your pup. A Bolingbrook, IL vet lists some of them below.

Wrong Water Temperature

Although many people enjoy scalding-hot showers, don’t assume your pooch shares this opinion. Dogs’ skin is very sensitive, and can be burned at lower temperatures than ours will. Of course, water that’s too cold isn’t good either. Opt for warm, not hot, water when bathing your canine pal.

Soap In The Eyes

This has probably happened to you at some point. Getting suds in y our eyes is just as uncomfortable for Fido as it is for us! Don’t use a lot of soap near your dog’s eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. Use a pitcher or teapot to rinse your pup’s furry face.

Bad Shampoo

Only use shampoos that are specifically made for dogs. Fido has a different PH balance than we do, so products made for humans aren’t safe or suitable for him. It’s also best to avoid shampoos that contain perfumes. These can be overpowering for your pet’s sensitive nose!

Poor Prep Work

Brush your furry pal before bathing him. This will remove dead fur and dander from Fido’s coat. It’s also a good idea to clip your pet’s claws before bath day, so he doesn’t scratch up your tub. (Tip: putting a mat down in your tub will also protect it.)

Bad Bathing Schedule

If you don’t bathe Fido often enough, you’ll end up with a stinky dog. However, over-bathing isn’t good either: this can strip the natural oils from your pooch’s skin, leaving him looking dry and a bit frizzy. Every dog is different, so ask your vet for recommendations.

No Reward

While getting bathed will probably never be Fido’s favorite thing, you can make it more pleasant for him. Offer your pup a yummy treat or a new toy after. Then, you get to enjoy cuddles from a clean, fresh-smelling pet.
