Adopt a Dog Month

October is Adopt A Dog Month! We love seeing our canine pals go to great forever homes. Read on as a local Bolingbrook, IL vet offers some tips on welcoming Fido into your home.

Adopting From Shelters

If you are ready to bring a new pup into your life, please consider adopting from a shelter. There are scores of adorable pooches in shelters, waiting for someone to adopt them and give them a great forever home. It’s a wonderful feeling to give a lovable canine a new lease on life, and a second chance at happiness. You’ll be able to choose from a variety of cute pups, and can spend a bit of time with Fido before finalizing everything. Adopting from shelters is often cheaper than going through pet stores, which is another great benefit. Last but not least, you’ll be promoting great animal welfare, and helping the shelter stay solvent.

Before you bring Fido home, you’ll need to do some puppyproofing. Remove or secure anything that could be dangerous. This includes anything small or sharp, such as tacks, jewelry, and sewing kit pieces; toxic plants; chemicals; medications; plastic bags and ties; and personal items, such as shoes and purses. If you have a yard, make sure there are no toxic plants growing in it. You’ll also need to check your fencing, and make sure it is secure. We recommend getting a self-latching gate as well.

Fido will need a few things. Your shopping list should include toys, treats, food, bedding, dishes, a leash, a collar or harness, and grooming supplies. We also recommend getting a crate. If you have a yard, you can score some extra tail wags by getting your furry friend a doghouse or a kiddie pool.

Settling In

It may take you and Fido some time to get to know each other. Your pet may have fears or quirks that you don’t know about yet. When walking your pup, use a sturdy leash: that way, if something startles him and he tries to bolt, he’s less likely to get away. A trip to the vet’s is definitely in order, but aside from that, just let your canine pal relax and settle in. You’ll have that tail going before you know it!
