Pets and Guests

Are you having visitors over the holidays? If so, you may want to take some precautions to make sure that all goes smoothly between them and your pets. Not everyone is as enamored of our four-legged friends as we are! Below, a Bolingbrook, IL vet discusses having pets and guests.

Guest Room

Our furry pals are wonderful companions, but they can get a bit stinky. To make sure that your guest room smells fresh, opt for floors instead of carpet in that room, if possible. Installing a good purifier will help, as will choosing hypoallergenic bedding. It’s also not a bad idea to ask guests to keep the door to their room shut. You don’t want Fido chewing on their shoes, or Fluffy sleeping in their suitcase!

House Rules

When it comes to pets, an ounce of prevention can be worth several pounds of cure. Food is one concern, especially around the holidays. Many of our favorite foods are toxic to our furry friends. Ask your guests not to feed your pet without asking. Better safe than sorry!

Your guests won’t necessarily know what is and isn’t safe for your pet. Candles, fireplaces, medicine, and small or sharp objects are a few things that are hazardous to our four-legged friends. It’s also very easy for pets to slip out open doors, or get their paws or tails stepped on. Keep a close eye on your pet!

Fido and Fluffy are both certified experts at getting us to fork over tasty tidbits at mealtime. However, begging can make guests uneasy. If your pet gets a bit theatrical at meals, put your furry little actor in another room when people are eating. It’s also a good idea to tire your pet out with a fun play session before your visitors arrive.

If you know or suspect that your visitors have allergies, take a few additional steps to keep them comfortable during their stay. Thoroughly dusting and vacuuming your home will help remove allergens from the air, as will changing your air filters.

No Stinky Pets

Give your furry buddy a good brushing before the big day. If you have a dog, give Fido a bath. That way, your guests can be greeted by a clean, fresh-smelling pet!
